School of Chemistry

The School of Chemistry (SOC), Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) has its unique origin in the early 60’s as a post graduate extension centre of the Department of Chemistry, University of Madras at Madurai, in 1958. The Department of Chemistry has bloomed into full-fledged School of Chemistry and it comprises five departments – Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Natural Products Chemistry and Materials Science with faculty strength of 18 and 2 CSIR Emeritus Scientists, endowed with rich teaching and research expertise. The chief architects of the School of Chemistry, Prof. Dr. C. Srinivasan, Formerly professor, Head and Emeritus scientist (AICTE) Department of Materials Science. Prof. S. Sivasubramanian, Former Professor and Head, Department of Organic Chemistry, Principal Investigator of the DST-IRHPA NMR 300 MHz Programme, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and Vice-Chancellor, Noorul Islam University, Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu. Prof. K. Pitchumani, Former Professor and Head, Department of Natural Products Chemistry, presently Vice-Chancellor, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. Prof. R. Ramaraj, DSc., FNA., FASc., FNASc, Former Professor and Head, Department of Physical Chemistry, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai.

Prof. Dr. A. Ramu, has been working as professor of Department of Inorganic Chemistry since 1999 and Head of the department for the past 9 years. He has been as programme coordinator additional charge UGC-University with Potential for Excellence, since June 2017 to promote academic, research, student welfare and infrastructure development of the university. He has also worked as a programme coordinator in UGC DSA, DST-FIST as a Chairperson School of chemistry during the year (2011-2013) and his research interest in the area of Bioinorganic, inorganic nanocomposites applications in biology. He has organized many national/international academic and research events as coordinator, director, organizing committee member, etc.
