Madurai Kamaraj University
Madurai Kamaraj University is on its relentless journey for the past 53 years surmounting hurdles of indigenous and exotic nature on its way and has passed through the tests of accreditation towards reaching the status of excellence. Established in 1965, Madurai Kamaraj University as a State University attained the status of University with Potential for Excellence for ‘Teaching, Research and Outreach’ in 2007. The University is governed by Acts, Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations. The University has been accredited with “A” grade in the 3rd cycle (2014) by NAAC. In the 2017 Golden Jubilee Convocation, 809 Ph.D. Scholars were awarded doctoral degrees. In the “SWACHHTA PAKHWADA” Ranking of Higher Educational Institutions in the Country, the HRD Ministry awarded Second Rank to the University in the category of Government Institutions on 14th September 2017. The University is in its untiring journey in search of knowledge creation and dissemination that resulted in recognitions by its faculty members which include 4 Shanti SwarupBhatnagar awards, 8 FNAs, 8 FNAScs, 11 FAScs, 2 TWAS, a Senior Spallanzani Fellow and 16 Tamil Nadu Scientist Awards. Fourteen faculty of the University have been elevated as Vice-Chancellors of various state and central Universities. Several Alumni are IAS/IPS/IRS officers. The University with 20 Schools comprising 77 Departments offers 43 Post Graduate, 39 M.Phil., 51 Ph.D. programmes and 16 diploma/ P.G. diploma/ certificate courses. Currently, a total of 2848 PG students and research scholars are on the roll. All the courses in the University follow Choice Based Credit Systemand there is an inbuilt provision for lateral and vertical mobility. Twelve schools are recognized under UGC with Special Assistance Programmes (SAP) such as CAS, DSA and DRS at various phases. Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi has sanctioned Rs. 9 Crore in the first phase under PURSE programme that supported seven science Schools. In the second phase, Rs. 7.5 Crore have been sanctioned for the period 2017-2021 Schools of Biological Sciences (SBS), Biotechnology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics are supported with DST-FIST programme and UPE Phase- I has been sanctioned Rs 28.65 crores. The funding agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DST, DBT, DAE-BRNS, MoEF, MoES, ICMR, ICSSR, DRDO, ICAR, MHRD etc. fund the research schemes in various departments. The University has a modernized central Library with 3 lakhs books, 15,000 e-journals, 3,000 e-books, 55,000 reference and text books. The one Gbps internet connection, INFONET centre with 50 nodes and smart class rooms have enriched the ICT enabled teaching and learning. As a visionary step, academic and administrative autonomy has been granted to select Schools. The University has established linkages with community around through its various outreach activities. The National and International level connectivity and visibility of this University is a pointer that the University is moving from the status of University with Potential for Excellence to the status of University of Excellence.
UNIVERSITY CAMPUS FROM RAILWAY JUNCTION :
There is one railway junction in the city of Madurai. However, there is no direct bus route from this station to reach Madura Kamaraj University. Therefore, participants are recommended to take an auto or small walk up distance within 30-50 meter to reach Periyar Bus Stand from where have been bus routes of Usilam Patti, Valandur, Pappapatti, Chellam Patti, Karumathur, Nattapatti, Vadakam Patti, Poruppu Mettupatti, Kandai, and Chacknaurani to reach the Madura Kamaraj University (Main Campus).
